CURRENT SERIES
(a) The South Carolina passenger car plates preferred in current use were first issued in 2003 as a no-cost option (and are now the main choice). They have a light blue and white background; at the top is IN GOD WE TRUST above a horizontal line both in gold, at the bottom South Carolina in dark blue, with national and state flags in mid-registration. The registration is black with three numerals to the left and one numeral and two letters to the right.
The 1999 plate is reflective white shading to blue at the top, which is a mountain skyline, and the sides. A palmetto tree is in the centre, South Carolina is at the bottom in blue, and at the top is the legend Smiling Faces. Beautiful Places in red. The registration is black and serial with three numerals and three letters.
Plates are revalidated biennially by means of month and year stickers in the lower corners; only a rear plate is required.
