    Ras al Khaimah

رأس الخيمة

CURRENT SERIES

(a)     In July 2004 new plates were introduced which could be bought as an alternative to the former normal series, but became standard issue in early 2007. They are black on reflective white and, on one line plates, have الامارات (“The Emirates”) and رأس الخيمة above U.A.E and R.A.K (all embossed) before a graphic of a typical Ras al Khaimah watch-tower  before the western number.   Two line plates are 320×160 mm and have U.A.E over R.A.K to the left of the graphic with الامارات over رأس الخيمة to the right;  all this is above a line above the western serial number.
In July 2008 a further series was issued in parallel to the 2004 series, initially by auction only, that has a series letter, initially A, at the left, over over UAE.RAK in the centre and a western number of up to five digits at the right.   In August 2009 the series letter C was introduced for new vehicle registrations.

(b)     Since 1992 taxis and vehicles for hire and reward have had plates measuring 318×159 mm, black on reflective green with three sections.   To the right is the Arabic number above the western equivalent separated by a horizontal divider and, silk screened to the left, الامارات العربية (“Arab Emirates”) and رأس الخيمة above the letters U.A.E. and R.A.K.

(c)     Since approximately September 2007 export plates have been white on reflective blue with a dividing horizontal line.   Above the line is U.A.E. above R.A.K. to the left, EXP vertically aligned in the centre and الامارات (“The Emirates”) above رأس الخيمة to the right.   Below the line is the western number of up to five digits.

(d)     Since the 1970s Royal household plates have usually been black on yellow with a number, crossed red and white flags and the emirate name, all in Arabic. Considerable variation exists as to the positions of the various sections and some have a western number also.   Early plates often had the number and flag separated from the text by a horizontal line.   Plates also exist that are oval or silver coloured. American sized plates for small sporty cars only have one flag and simplified wording due to size constraints.
Since the introduction of the “watchtower” series plates, Royal household vehicles often have plates from this series with low or interesting numbers.
The Sheik’s official car has yellow plates with a single red flag and رأس الخيمة (“Ras al Khaimah”).
Government plates are usually similar to Royal household plates but have حكومي (“governmental ”) also.   Government plates also exist with only the western words and number.

(e)     Since 1992 dealer plates have been similar to those for taxis and vehicles for hire and reward but white on red.   At upper right is تحت التجربة (“on test”) above the Arabic number.

(f)      Motorcycle plates are owner provided in various shapes, styles, colours and materials.

(g)     Since 2003 municipal vehicles have had black on reflective blue plates similar to the normal series with البلدية (“municipality”) above an Arabic number on the right side.

(h)     The Emiri Guard have white on red, all Arabic, hand-painted plates with, to the left, الحرس (“Guard”) over المحلي (“local”).   To the right is a watch-tower emblem over رأس الخيمة over a one or two digit number.

(j)     National police vehicles have plates from the unified police series, with serials 30nnn, see U.A.E. paragraph (e), either in the standard or a variant design.   The variant plates are white on blue-grey quartered with white lines with the U.A.E. seven stars and falcon emblem in the centre.   Across the upper two quarters is وزارة الداخلية شرطة رأس الخيمة, “Ministry of Interior Police Ras al Khaimah”.   In the lower two quarters are the five digit Arabic and western numbers.
Local police vehicles have plates only in the variant design with five digit numbers (motorcycles have four digits).   The first two digits indicate the type of vehicle and the numbers range from at least 10nnn to 87nnn.   Police motorcycles have similar plates in a smaller size from both the unified series (309nn) and the local series (20nn).

FORMER SERIES

(p)     From 1992 normal series plates were 318×159 mm, black on reflective white with three sections.   To the right was the number in Arabic above the western equivalent separated by a horizontal divider and, to the left, الامارات العربية (“Arab Emirates”) and رأس الخيمة above the letters U.A.E. and R.A.K.   This was the only emirate to have the left (or centre section on one line plates) silk screened rather than embossed.   Single line plates also had three sections with the western number to the left and the Arabic number to the right of the same words.
There were small changes over the years to the dies used and the positioning of the numerals on normal one line plates.
