HISTORICAL NOTES
(z) It is not known when registrations were first adopted, but by 1925 they were using the SD prefix.
-1979 plates were white on black in the old South African style: the letters SD and up to five numerals, not denoting a district, for private and commercial vehicles and also motorcycles. Government plates had SG and a simple serial number. Diplomatic plates were coloured yellow on black. The plates described in paragraph (c) above were as now but also in the old style.
