HISTORICAL NOTES  

(z)     1922   RSM and a serial number in black on a white plate.
        1923-52   white plates with RSM in red and a serial in black from 1 to 999, then A1 to A99, etc.




(y)     52-66   white plates with the Republic crest and three numerals or later one letter and two numerals, above R.S.M. in blue lettering.



(x)     1966-76   Type 1 plates completely superseding the previous issue, see paragraph (p.i).   Diplomats had no special Type 1 plates, only a CD oval alongside the normal plate.
        15 Sep 76   Type 2 plates were issued from 10000, see paragraph (p.ii). Diplomatic vehicles had both front and rear plates the same with blue characters on reflective white, with the letters CD, the crest and two numerals above REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO.
        Jun 79   Type 3 series commenced from about 14400, see paragraph (p.iii).
        11 Apr 83   current POLIZIA plates introduced; previously they had Type 1 plates with GENDARMERIA or VIGILI URBANI beneath the serial in red. Type 2 plates were as the former series, square or rectangular, also with the legend in red.   The front plate had five red numerals followed by RSM in blue.   Type 3 plates were as normal series but with GE or VU in red and three numerals.
        Nov 85   rectangular revalidation stickers introduced.










(w)     Sep 87   current Type 4 series commenced from 30000 (7600 for motorcycles) , see paragraph (p.iv), and circular validation stickers introduced.
        Jul 88   Type 4 reached 33700.
        1991   Type 4 reached 41000 and temporary series introduced.
        1993?   moped registrations introduced?   Probably at the same time as in Italy.
        3 Dec 93   Type 4 reached 47999 and followed by A0001.
        13 Apr 94   motorcycle plates reached 9099 and followed by A001.
        1995?   construction equipment plates introduced.
        Sep 96   Type 4 reached B0500 and mopeds 9000. Current agricultural machinery plates introduced.
        1998   mopeds reached 9999 and followed by A001.
        Jul 00   Type 4 reached C series.
        2000   trailers first reported as having a small R rather than the same letter in full size.
