SAN MARINO

REPUBBLICA DI
SAN MARINO

CURRENT SERIES

(a)     Since December 1993 normal series plates in San Marino have been sized 390×120 mm with a reflective white base.   To the left is a multicoloured crest of the republic preceding one serial letter and a four digit serial number in blue commencing from A0001.   In blue on two lines below the crest is the legend REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO.   Both front and rear plates are identical.   This style of plate is referred to as “Type 4” (our nomenclature).
After the first twelve months a circular revalidation stickers showing the month and year of expiry is placed on the rear plate between the crest and registration.

(b)     Provisional plates are often hand-painted on cardboard showing the normal registration prior to the issue of normal plates.

(c)     Since 13th April 1994 motorcycles and tricycles have had plates similar to the normal series, but 165 mm square with the crest and legend above one serial letter and a three digit serial number commencing from A001.   These also have a circular validation sticker after the first twelve months.   Mopeds have all blue on white plates with the crest and legend followed by one letter above three numerals.

(d)     Temporary plates were introduced in 1991 and are similar to normal series with a plain black crest at the left followed by the letter E in red and four numerals in black, between which is a sticker showing the day, month and year of expiry. Plates for motorcycles are similar but 165 mm square with the crest, legend, E and sticker above four numerals.

(e)     State owned vehicles have normal series plates with, in addition, a small blue plate with silver writing.   The crest is at the left and on the right the wording Repubblica di San Marino, Servisso di Stato No..... , the number being the same as the registration number.

(f)    Diplomats, the Police, the Red Cross and trailers have plates similar to the normal series but the serial is preceded by a code or text in red:

    CD 01 upwards

Diplomatic Corps

    CRS 001 upwards

Red Cross (Croce Rossa Sammarinese)

    R 900 upwards

trailers

    POLIZIA 001 upwards

police and gendarmeria cars

    POLIZIA 001 upwards

"       "      scooters (text above number)

    POLIZIA 0001 upwards

"       "      motorcycles (text above number)

It appears that whilst retaining the same general appearance, trailer plates now have a small R at the top of the plate, rather than as a full size prefix.

(g)     Trade plates are white with the Republic’s crest and the letters RSM in blue above a low serial number in blue; at the bottom of the plate is the word PROVA in red.

(h)     Agricultural machinery has all black on yellow plates with the crest of the republic and REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO followed by M.A. (macchina agricola) above four numerals.   Construction machinery has similar plates but in green on white with the crest and legend followed by M.O. above four numerals.

FORMER SERIES

(p)    i.   Between 1966 and 1976 rear plates were white with blue lettering; the crest, with a red border and RSM above a four digit serial from 0001 to 9999.   Front plates were small and Italian styled with four numerals and RSM in blue on white.   By the end of 1973 9999 had been reached and numbers were reissued.   By 1975 all gaps had been filled and 9999 reached again.   The series was extended by using from A001 to about B999 by September 1976.   These two series are known as Type 1 and are validated with a rectangular sticker on the rear plate.

ii.   From 15th September 1976 Type 2 plates were issued having a reflective white ground, still with blue lettering.   There was a choice between square or rectangular (485×110 mm) rear plates; in the latter case the shield was between the letters and number, but otherwise unchanged. Front plates remained the same as Type 1.   The rear plate is validated with a rectangular sticker.   Numbers started at 10000, with reissues having leading zeros to make up five digits.   Numbers reached about 14300 by June 1979 when Type 3 series commenced. In this series (Type 2), plates for the side of trailers have been observed with RIMORCHIO in red above RSM in blue, followed by three numerals in blue, all on a white ground.

iii.   From June 1979, Type 3 plates were in use, sized 340×120 mm, with a reflective white base and similar to the current Type 4 series, except that REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO appeared in larger letters across the bottom of the plate.   Rectangular validation stickers were introduced in November 1985 and placed below the crest and to the left of the country name.   Motorcycle plates were 165 mm square with the crest followed by REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO on three lines above four numerals.

iv.   From September 1987 plates were similar to the current Type 4 series but with a five digit serial number between 30000 and 47999; some lower numbers may have been reissued.   The rear plate is validated with a circular sticker.

From 1993 mopeds had plates identical to the current series but with one numeral above three numerals.

(r)     Trailers had Type 1, 2 or 3 plates as for the normal series but the three blue numerals were prefixed by the letter R in red.

(s)     Agricultural vehicles had the crest of the republic and the letters RSM above four numerals, all in blue on yellow.   Below this, in red, was TRATTORE (tractor) or RIMORCHIO AGRICOLO (agricultural trailer).
