CURRENT SERIES

(a)     Since April 1997 private vehicle plates have been black on reflective white, 303×153 mm, with قطر (“Qatar”) above the Arabic number above the smaller western number.   Single line plates are 520×112 mm and have قطر over the small western number to the left of the Arabic number.   Both types have ٠١ (“01”), the vehicle class number, in the top left corner.   A sticker showing the expiry date of the licence should be placed on the rear plate.   Interesting or low numbers may be purchased and surrendered numbers are reissued.
Royal household plates are in the same format except the left portion of the plates is maroon with a “saw-tooth” line simulating the national flag.

(b)     Since 1983 all other vehicles have had reflective plates 320×160 mm and in a typical quartered Arabic style.   The upper left section has the name of the country above the vehicle class and the upper right has the serial number, all in Arabic, with the western equivalents below.
Private transport vehicles with numbers up to five digits have black on green plates with قطر (“Qatar”) over نقل خاص (“private transport”) at top left.   At bottom left is QATAR over PRIV. TRANS.   When the number is six digits, the plates have قطر over ن‌/‌خ (“Kh/N”) at top left and QATAR over PRIV. T at bottom left.
Large commercial trailers have plates which are black on orange to the left and black on white to the right. قطر (“Qatar”) over مقطورة (“trailer”) is at the top left and QATAR over TRAILER is at the bottom left.   The orange on these plates regularly fades away completely.
